Lancaster, Texas - Yaqub Salik Talib, a youth football coach and the brother of former NFL star Aqib Talib, turned himself in on Monday after he fatally shot his counterpart on the opposing team during a game.
The shooting took place during a game on Saturday, after a call made by officials led to a fight between the opposing coaches.
According to witness testimony shared with ESPN, Talib (39) eventually pulled out a gun and shot Michael Hickmon (43) multiple times before fleeing, taking his weapon with him.
Video of the incident has been shared to social media.
Hickmon was later pronounced dead at the hospital and a murder warrant was immediately issued for the suspect. Talib eventually turned himself in to police on Monday.
Clark Birdsall, Talib's attorney, told the Associated Press that his client "regrets the tragic loss of life, but self-surrendered this morning so that he may have the chance to say his side of the story."
Aqib Talib was present during the incident, but claims he was not involved in the violence. Hickmon's nine-year-old son was also there, along with many other family and children.
"I don't know how to explain it to the kids," said Mike Freeman, president of the team that Hickmon coached. "That's the part that I'm stuck on right now. How do I explain it to them? Why? This is something that these kids will remember for the rest of their life.
